出自苏族人的语言。Minne意思是“水”。Sota意思是“天蓝色的”。该名原为密西西比河的一条支流的名字。后来欧洲各国殖民者都想用自己的语言为这里命名，但最重妥协为用这个原住民语言的词汇命名。
